How To Choose Your Garden Furniture And Make It Last

This guide will help you to choose the right garden furniture and make it last.Garden furniture is now a fashion item as the patio and garden increasingly become an additional functional space to the home.

It will be worthwhile doing some research before buying any garden furniture.Doing so will greatly increase your chances of buying garden furniture that is right for you and will last you a long time. The following guide will help you to choose the right furniture.

Firstly decide whether you want stackable or foldaway furniture that will be put away in the shed or garage in winter or if you want permanent solid garden furniture that remains in situ all year round. If you have made the decision to keep the furniture in the garden throughout the year, it will need to be made from hardwearing materials like hardwood, aluminium or rust free wrought iron.It is well worth spending the money on the heavier more durable materials as this will be much more cost effective in the long run.

Getting the right construction and material will make all the difference.Choose a material that will complement you garden or patio garden.Aim for an even look to your garden once the furniture is added.

Wood is the firm favourite for garden furniture it has all the necessary attributes but it will need some maintainance.Choose a tropical hardwood which is high in natural oil content like teak, iroko or courbaril. These woods are weather resistant and can be left outside throughout the year.

Examine the joints, ideally they will be mortice and tenon joints as opposed to bolts which might corrode. If there are metal nuts and bolts, make sure that they are made from rust proof materials namely: aluminium, stainless steel or brass.

Make sure the construction is only premium grade teak for our garden furniture, so any knots, cracks and other defects are eliminated before the timber is used to build the furniture.Premium manufacturers dry the wood in a kiln to seal in the moisture and avoid cracks forming.

Teak garden furniture that is assembled using epoxy based glues tend to have the best performance and durability of all the types of joints as the epoxy resin used will not be affected by rain or frost.

If your teak garden furniture becomes dirty it is easy to clean with warm soapy water and a scrubbing brush which will enable you to restore the beautiful silver grey weathered look.

For more intensive cleaning, you might want to use a pressure hose at no more than 80 bar (1200psi) and no close than 30cm.Add a small amount of bleach to the water once a year. This will stop algae growing on the surface.

You can remove any grease spots by washing immediately with light detergent, or just leave nature to take its course.

During periods of dry weather, the wood might start to crack slightly. This is natural and no action needs to be taken as when the moisture in the atmosphere increases the timber will return to its original condition.

Teak oil improves the look of the furniture rather than the lifespan, apply it to new furniture for best results.Be sure to read the instructions carefully before use.Only use teak oil on dry wood, moisture will cause the surface to turn black.
